Liberty, equality, fraternity through my graphic design lens

As part of my studies at the University of Portsmouth, I decided to explore the phrase "Liberty, equality, fraternity" through a graphic design lens. These principles encapsulate the values of the French Republic and have played a significant role in the country's history and political philosophy. The result was a typeface and a textile print that I created.

Process

My historical research led me to the original scanned book (Robespierre, 1790) on Google Books, and I examined the context of the phrase when it was used for the first time.

I was surprised when I found out that the author of these words was already suggesting their placement, and that suggestion happened to be on a chest.

Being under the influence of Keith Haring, when thinking about how to visually represent the phrase and what typeface I would use, I saw a calendar for 1989/1990 made by Keith Haring.

I decided to create a typeface that would be a combination of the original typeface used in the book and Keith Haring's style. This typeface became the basis for text style.

The final result was a textile print that became a visual representation of the phrase.
